A recent study indicates that patients who discontinue blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on lost weight much more quickly than those who end conventional diet and exercise plans.
Research printed in a major health publication demonstrates that while obese individuals often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Individuals using such drugs need to be cognizant of the risk of fast weight regain when the therapy is stopped," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain means a return to original weight within about 18 months.
Analyzing Approaches
The research, which looked at dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of these new drugs with older methods.
Scientists emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically experience a less rapid creep back—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Explaining the Fast Regain
Doctors suggest the mechanism of the drugs is key to understanding the accelerated regain.
The injections copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations far above than normal might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also reduce responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating a significant risk."
An Ongoing Condition?
The NHS suggest the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts contend that, considering the high risk of relapse, the treatment might need to be life-long.
This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "underscore the chronic character of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
Patient Accounts
People who have come off the jabs report a sudden resurgence of hunger.
"I experienced something flipping and I was suddenly ravenous," recalled an individual.
The struggle is worsened if users have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Widespread Adoption
Figures indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with demand remaining high.
- Use is more common among women than men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
In conclusion, experts caution that while the jabs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and lasting health benefits relies on combined behavioural management.
