A bettor profited close to $500,000 by predicting the removal of Venezuela's president just before it was made public, leading to inquiries about the possibility of profiting from non-public details of the US operation.

Changing Odds in Wagers

Bets placed on the crypto-platform, a blockchain-based service, that the Venezuelan president would be removed from office by the end of January surged in the period preceding President Donald Trump stated on January 3rd that the president had been apprehended.

A single trader, which joined the platform recently and made four bets, all on political events in Venezuela, made more than $436,000 from a starting bet of $32,537.

Who placed the bet is a mystery. This unidentified trader had only a cryptographic address for identification.

Probability Spikes Before News Break

Market statistics shows that users estimated the likelihood of the president's removal at just a low 6.5 percent in the midday period of the Friday before the event.

But the odds had climbed to eleven percent by late Friday night and spiked dramatically in the morning of January 3rd, indicating a rapid movement in betting activity immediately prior to the public announcement was made.

"This particular bet has all the hallmarks of a trade based on confidential knowledge," commented an industry expert.

Several of other traders also earned significant sums from predicting the capture.

Regulatory Scrutiny Emerges

Some lawmakers are starting to take note.

Proposed legislation put forward on Monday would prevent public officials from making trades on forecasting platforms if they have "material nonpublic information" related to a wager.

This sector encountered regulatory challenges under the last presidential term. Yet it has received a warmer welcome during the current presidency.

Trading on insider information is illegal in the securities markets, but there are more ambiguous rules in the event betting arena.

An official representative for Kalshi said their site "strictly forbids such activities of any form."
